Our next move was to Homer, known as the Halibut Fishing Capital of the World. With a small freezer our fishing is limited to the fish markets. We saw beautiful snow covered mountains and volcanoes. One was Mt. Iliamna, and the other was Mt. Redoubt. They are some of the volcanoes in the Ring of Fire that encircles the Pacific Ocean and are part of the Alaska Peninsula-Aleutian Range. Luckily they have plenty of pull-outs to stop and take pictures.
On our way to Homer we stopped in Ninilchik to see a Russian Orthodox Church that was built in 1901. There were lots of crosses marking graves in the cemetery which were in front and around the church.
From our campsite we have another $Million Dollar$ beautiful view of the mountains on Kachemak Bay. Our first stop was lunch on the Homer Spit and touring the shops. The next day we took a drive on East End Road that took us almost to the end of the bay where we enjoyed the sights of glaciers and beautiful scenery. From there we went to Skyline Drive which took us higher in elevation to look down onto the Homer Spit.
Our last day we took a boat tour of Gull Island and Kachemak Bay. We were on the water for two hours in Kachemak Bay and circled Gull Island. Our Captain Paul was very knowledgeable about the boats in the harbor and the wildlife we saw. We were extremely lucky seeing Puffins, Cormorants, Sea Gulls, Otters, and a Seal, quite a few Eagles in trees and on a rock a mountain goat.
