Kenai Peninsula - Soldatna, AK & Kenai, AK

After leaving our daughter and family in Wasilla we headed to the Kenai Peninsula, one of our favorite places in Alaska.  Our first stay was in Soldatna.  This is a huge fishing and clamming area and it was quite evident in the campground, seeing waders hanging from many rigs drying out.  The people next to us had caught and froze 70 lbs of salmon fillets.  Another group had returned from a day’s digging with 120 razor clams.  Several campers had gone out on charter boats and figured their haul of fish only cost them $49 per pound.
A short drive took us to the little City of Kenai that was originally an Indian village and in 1791 became the second permanent Russian settlement in Alaska.  We visited the Holy Assumption Russian Orthodox Church with its blue onion dome, that was built in 1906.  On the way back to the campground we stopped at a fish processing facility to buy smoked salmon, shrimp, and halibut.
